It is a tradition of the Shaolin monastic population that it is obligatory for every Buddhist monk living in the monastery, while pursuing a self-cultivation career, to work for earning his own livelihood. We adhere conscientiously to the dictum of one of the celebrities in the history of the Chan Order that “For a day you choose to stay away from your work, the refectory would keep you out for that day”.
