(18) A survey of the history of Buddhism would give us to understand that it was a convention with the Buddhists in ancient China to use the state-of-the-art communication technology and dissemination techniques of their times [sic] for propagating Buddhism. It was the Buddhists who were the first batch of people in Chinese history to start using the paper [sic]. They employed the paper for making numerous copies of Chinese version of the Buddhist Scriptures originally written in Sanskrit, so much so that the prices of the amounts of paper sold in Luoyang at that time were extravagantly hiked up. Again it was Buddhist circles in ancient China who were the first in Chinese history to start using the technique of block printing, not to say the art of stone carving, the technology of pagoda and stupa construction, etc. As a matter of fact, a pagoda or stupa is actually what we would call a memorial today for celebrating or honoring the memory of a highly esteemed Buddhist monk who had a brilliant self-cultivation career or accomplished nonpareil deeds in the interest of Chinese Buddhism.
