When I was admitted by Shaolin Monastery over twenty years ago, the only means of livelihood for the entire monastic population was twenty-eight mu of arable land. From 1979 to 1985 a fund amounting to 2,800,000 yuan was appropriated to the monastery by the government for renovating the infrastructure of the monastery. At that time I thought it would be a stark shame on all the monastic population if the monastery failed to resurrect between 1979 and 1985 with the financial aid from the government.
