(8) I have done everything in my power both to safeguard the legitimate interests of Shaolin Monastery and to promote its development. My motive in making such an exertion is twofold. On the one hand it is my duty as an abbot to make the Buddhist Chan Order flourish. On the other I want to do whatever I can to preserve traditional Chinese culture. I have been to many parts of the world. My tours were all called for by my sense of duty. Now that both the international situation and the domestic situation in China are very favorable to the development of the Buddhist Chan Order, it is obligatory for my colleagues and me to take advantage of the favorable climates, domestic and abroad, to do what our duty calls upon us to do. Otherwise we shall be left to forever regret for our sinful inertia in the face of the propitious climates.
