A novice Chan practitioner must have patience and should refrain from impetuously striving to attain Buddhahood in a short time, though he should aim high and aspire to Buddhahood attainment. As a green hand in the field of religious self-cultivation, he must prioritize ridding his mind of greed and delusion over any other exertion. Striving to free his mind, in the first place, of greed and delusion is the most reliable method for him to comprehend Buddhism and initiate his religious self-cultivation. Having rid his mind of greed and delusion is the first requisite for laying down a solid foundation on which his subsequent “self-cultivation programs” can safely unfold.(From My Heart My Buddha)
