(7) I am of the opinion that before addressing himself to pursuing self-cultivation, a practitioner needs to adapt himself to the line of conduct of being willingly of service to others. Buddhist Scriptures have pointed out that an undertaking which can be of service to other sentient beings is a task a Buddhist votary should voluntarily undertake to fulfill. The duty a Buddhist votary should fulfill every day is not confined to worshipping the Buddha, doing seated meditation, or reading texts. He should do everything in his power to incline the masses towards Buddhism, to induce them to raise the level of their morality, and to enhance social well-being of the multitudes.
