Suppose a monk would honestly exert to toll the bell in his monastery very dutifully as his abbot asks him to. With the passage of a couple of years he spent in dutifully tolling the bell, his mentality is bound to undergo a positive change. The nuts and bolts of Chan self-cultivation, I should say, have already been thoroughly learned by him.
