Bodhidharma, the First Patriarch of the Buddhist Chan Order, bequeathed us the following instruction: “Without a powerful constitution, a self-cultivation practitioner must go unrewarded for his effort.” His instruction clearly indicates that in order to attain enlightenment a Chan practitioner must practice gong-fu to make his constitution powerful, else it is hopeless for him to attain enlightenment. In other words, a Chan practitioner must be an incarnator of Chan tenets before he attains enlightenment. That a gong-fu practitioner must be at the same time a Chan practitioner is exactly what differs Shaolin gong-fu from gong-fu of any other wushu school in China.
