What differs the “traditional Chinese martial arts of the Shaolin school” (namely, “Shaolin gong-fu”) from those of other schools consists in the fact that the former renders the traditional Chinese martial arts to become all-round incarnators (or demonstrators) of the philosophy and tenets of the Buddhist Chan Order. Therefore a practitioner of “gong-fu of the Shaolin school” (hereafter, “Shaolin gong-fu” or “Shaolin wushu”) is required to avail himself of the “Shaolin gong-fu” training as one of the means for carrying on his self-cultivation program. In other words, the attitude he takes to his “Shaolin gong-fu” training should be the same as that he takes to his self-cultivation. In a word, a “Shaolin gong-fu” practitioner should be integrated both the philosophy (and tenets) of the Chan Order and traditional Chinese martial arts.
