(18) “Adhering to the right line of conduct is tantamount to strenuously pushing ahead with a Buddhist-Chan self-cultivation program.” This is a short passage—and one of my favorite passages—from Platform Sutra by Hui Neng, the Sixth Patriarch of the Buddhist Chan Order. In my opinion, this short passage, being in itself a theological proposition, is profoundly didactic and touching, because the purport of the passage can be regarded not only as a very explicit and clearly defined behavioral norm but as a feasible and philosophically impeccable policy for triggering off a Chan practitioner’s self-cultivation program. In fact such a policy can work as a shortcut to expedite a practitioner’s achievement of enlightenment. (From My Heart My Buddha)
