(11) When preaching Buddhism, a Buddhist preacher should not simply select a sutra from the Tripitaka and expounded the text word by word to his audience, because such a literal interpretation of text won’t work for preaching purpose. He needs to preach lively, flexibly, and convincingly by citing examples from everyday life for illustrating the text. Besides he should make himself become very familiar with the way his audience conducts its everyday life. In a word he should strive to become very conversant with the mentality of his local public, so that he can introduce the most appropriate dharma-gates to various types of people among his audience. A Buddhist preacher needs to strive to tap into his own intellectual potential for improving the quality of his preaching.(From My Heart My Buddha)
