(10) Nowadays the practices of “chanting Buddhist Scriptures, of making confession of one’s sins before the image or statue of the Buddha, and of burning incense before the Buddha” have been coming into vogue with the multitudes, especially with the rural population. Such a social phenomenon stems mainly from the nationwide low level of elementary education in present-day China, especially in her rural areas. To raise the nationwide level of elementary education needs a long period of time. Besides the Buddhist institutions and Buddhist monastic institutions in China in general and these two kinds of Buddhist institutions in her rural areas in particular need to strive particularly hard to improve their own spiritual, moral, and intellectual caliber and capacity, though it goes without saying that attainment of such an improvement needs time. Nowadays a fear prevailing over Buddhist circles in China is that they might be accused of being disseminating debased superstition or practicing idolatry. But I don’t think such a fear is rational, because so long as Buddhism is really doing good deeds in the interest of the Chinese people, its survival is irreversible. The survival of Buddhism depends solely on whether or not its performance is completely in the interest of the masses.
