(8) Since we, Buddhists, would devote ourselves, and are devoting ourselves, to propagating Buddhism and administering salvation to the multitudes, it goes without saying that it is incumbent upon us to have direct contacts with them in person and to face up to not only any problems they might pose to us but also any problems which they are unable to handle. The extent to which Buddhism can exert to help the masses handle their spiritual or moral issues and the extent to which the masses feel satisfied with our exertion in that regard constitute two points we, Buddhists, should keep track of all the time. Else Buddhism in China is not likely to thrive.
