(7) The only concern of a Buddhist monastic institution consists in providing the multitudes with spiritual service gratis. Achievement of a Buddhist monastic institution can be gauged only with the extent of satisfaction shown by the multitudes with regard to the spiritual service a Buddhist monastic institution has provided them gratis. This is the reason, with which Buddhism can duly justify its survival. I hope all Buddhist monastic institutions in China are fully aware of this, because this constitutes the basic motive behind all the activities of a Buddhist monastic institution. The premise of Buddhism’s survival in the world is the discovery by Sakyamuni, who was immeasurably merciful, compassionate, and wise, of the truth of the universe and human life. From his discovery of the truth stemmed his creation of innumerable dharma-gates that serve to edify the mundane world and impel it to proceed in the direction of universal salvation and liberation. It is due to his formulation of the innumerable dharma-gates that innumerable Buddhist monastic institutions have come into being. Accordingly it is upon the Three Jewelsthe Buddhathe Dharmaand the sanghathat Buddhism relies for its existence, the only purpose and the only reason for which are both to propagate the teachings of Buddha (and all the realized bodhisattvas having appeared since the Buddha’s time) and to administer salvation for all sentient beings. And this is also the sacred cause we, Buddhists, would consistently devote ourselves to.From My Heart My Buddha
