Chan Master Foguang's disciple Dazhi was back after twenty years' studies. He told master Foguang his of his travels in the Dharma Room, then he asked, "Master, how is it going for these years?"
Master Foguang said, "Great! I live in the sea of Dharma every day, preaching, writing, and chanting sutra; I am so happy. There is no life better than this."
Dazhi said with concern, "You master should take more rest."
It was late at night. Master Foguang said to Dazhi, "You can go to sleep now; we have time to talk later."
In the early morning, Dazhi heard faintly the chanting sound and the sound of the wooden fish by Master Foguang from Meditation Room. In the day time, Master Foguang always talks Dharma with patience to groups of disciples coming to pay homage. Once he was in the Meditation Room, he either read and commented on the disciples' reports, or compiled the teaching materials of the disciples. He always had many things to do every day.
Finally, Master Foguang finished the talk with other disciples. Taking the chance, Dazhi rushed to ask Master Foguang, "Master, during the twenty years of our departure, you have been living a busy life, but why don't you seem older?"
Master Foguang replied, "I have no time for growing old."
The words "no time for growing old" always rang in Dazhi's ears thereafter.
