Once, a monk asked Chan master Weikuan, "Does the dog have the Buddha-nature?"

"Yes." He answered.

"Do you have the Buddha-nature?"

"I have not."

"Why do all the sentient beings have the Buddha-nature except you?"

"I am not a sentient being of what you mean."

"If you are not a sentient being, then you are a Buddha?"

"Neither am I."

"What on earth are you?"

"I am not a 'what'."

Finally, the monk asked, "Is that we can see or think of?"

"That is the inscrutability of the inscrutability."
