When the Buddha was still alive, an Indian monk named Heizhi once came to him. With his superpower, he holds two vases in his two hands to present them to the Buddha.

The Buddha said to him, "Let it go!"

Heizhi put the vase in his left hand down.

The Buddha said again, "Let it go!"

Then Heizhi put the vase in his right hand down.

But the Buddha still told him, "Let it go!"

At the time the Indian monk said, "I am empty-handed now and have nothing to put down. What do you want me to let go now?"

The Buddha said, "I didn’t ask you to put down the vases in your hands. What I want you to let go is your Six Senses, Six Dusts and Six Consciousnesses. When you release them all, you will release yourself from the shackles of life and death."

At that moment, the monk Heizhi understood what the Buddha means by "letting go".
