"Take it easy, buddy," said master Qili, who was chanting sutra, "the money is in that drawer, take it yourself."
"You monk are sensible," said the thief. Master Qili watched him quietly.
"You are very cooperative, so I will leave you some for food." Then the thief left him some coins and was to go away.
"Hey, buddy, shouldn't you say thank you after taking other's things?" master Qili said to the thief, looking at him.
"Oh, I thank you."
A few days later, the thief was arrested. When the officer brought the thief to master Qili, saying, "Did the rogue steal your money, master Qili?"
"Didn't he tell you? I gave the money to him, and he gratefully thanked me." Master Qili said.
The thief acquired mitigation of punishment because of master Qili's kindness. After his release from the prison, he went to master Qili for repentance and became a disciple of master Qili attending him for all his life.
