Bodhiruci, a Buddhist monk from North India, was a master of Yogacara school of Mahayana and an expert on the Tripitaka (Sutta, Vinaya, Abhidhamma). He also knew well the teaching of Vajrayana Buddhism which sprung up then. Devoted to preaching the Dharma, Bodhiruci arrived in Luoyang in 508 A.D. (the 1st year of the reign of Yongping of the Northern Wei Dynasty). He was received and treated with great respect by Emperor Xuanwu who provided great support in his scripture translation. At the same year he went to Shaolin Temple and worked with Ratnamati to translate Ten Stages Sutra (Dasabhumikasutra Sastra). After three years’ efforts, he translated four volumes of Uttaratantra Shastra, two volumes of Lotus Sutra, twelve volumes of Ten Stages Sutra, ten volumes of Maharatnakuta Sutra and other classics of Yogacara Buddhism. Bodhiruci’s translation of Buddhist texts had a far-reaching influence on the further study of Buddhism.
