China is in a historical period of the great social transformation, which is a a tough test for Buddhism in the world. If we compare the modernization to the tide, Buddhism will be like a boat. We have to face the tide and control the direction, knowing what we should and shouldn’t do. Only in this way, we could firmly sail on the waves.
The rising tides raise the boat rather than be washed away. Buddhism, out of world and in the world, is just like a boat, its half into-half out of the water. For these fundamental relations, we need to stay awake. (From Words of Chan by Shi Yongxin)
