(6) Everybody knows that when Sakyamuni Buddha was sitting by the Bodhi-tree and stared at the stars, he attained enlightenment. Some of you may raise the question: “May we know the content of his enlightenment?” My answer to this question is this: “The kernel of his enlightenment is that he succeeded in forming a correct definition of ‘delirious obsession’ (vikalpa).” Moreover his enlightenment led him to shed light on the fact that it is by ‘delirious obsession’ in an individual’s psyche that his or her Buddha-nature is enshrouded and hidden from his or her perception. Sakyamuni points out that the agent that is able to reduce a human being to a state of obstinate befuddlement and bog him down in the six kinds of rebirth is none other than ‘delirious obsession’.
