In the long evolution course of human civilization, ancestors never stopped their inner world of exploration and sitting in meditation is the exact one of many ways. The practice of sitting in meditation originated from ancient culture and religious traditions such as Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and even all classes of authors as well as Judaism, Catholicism, Orthodox Eastern Church, Mohammedanism, and Christianism in the West all have the tradition of siting in meditation. The Grand Monk Yongxin explained, “Different sitting in meditation whose vows and energy are different, and different goals shape different results. Some people sitting in meditation are to strengthen the breath while some are to calm the inner mind. Sitting in meditation in Chan Buddhism is to practice Chan, enlighten wisdom and know about the reality of all the dharma.” 

 

Chan Buddhism, through the integration with Chinese Confucianism and Taoism, has becomes one of Buddhist schools, closely combining with Chinese culture. Shaolin Temple, as the ancestral monastery of Chan sect, has dependent five lineages and seven schools originating from Shaolin Chan Buddhism in China, from Sengchou to Dharma, influencing South Korea, Japan, Vietnam and even the world.
