(48) The core of Chan culture consists of the three branches of learning: <1> sila and vinaya, <2> Samadhi achieved through meditation, and <3> prajna. By “sila and vinaya” is meant the Chan regulations, procedures, and criteria. By “Samadhi” is meant the objective of a practitioner’s self-cultivation, conviction, and values. And by “prajna” is meant sagacity, imagination, and creativity. Buddhist votaries living in Shaolin Monastery have been consistently carrying on, in a communal milieu, their self-cultivation programs in strict compliance with Gautama Buddha’s teachings. They are resolutely seeking “full-scale spiritual freedom”. It is only until after a practitioner has obtained “full-scale spiritual freedom” that he can behave without any attachment to the mundane life and lead a life enriched by his own creativity. “spiritual freedom” is an attribute inherent in a human being. When an individual’s psyche is corrupted by defilements, his spiritual freedom must be eclipsed. However his eclipsed spiritual freedom can return to normal if an individual is self-confident and has confidence in his future.(From My Heart My Buddha)
