(47) Having been introduced into China, Buddhism was impelled to adapt itself to the Confucian criteria in the matter of ethics. As a result it has been, ever since, emphasizing the function of sila and vinaya so that it can avert opprobrium from Confucians. On the other hand, Buddhism had to gloss over the doctrinal discrepancy between Buddhism and Taoism by resorting to the painstaking expatiation on the significance of Samadhi and the wisdom derived therefrom, so that the two different systems of faith might roughly dovetail. In this way Taoism was pacified so long as Chinese Buddhism would not in any way bother to ruffle the cultural backwater in China at that time, and so long as Samadhi and wisdom—as a derivative from Samadhi—were not interpreted in terms that might embarrass Taoism which upholds sagacity that takes the form of a blithe, unperturbed, and fluid compliance with the way of nature. To tell the truth, sila and vinaya are very instrumental in safeguarding probity in a Buddhist votary. And Samadhi and wisdom work very efficiently to ensure fortitude and peace of mind in a Chan practitioner.
