(57) Although the proposition, “self-purification of one’s mind in order to uncover its inherent ‘Buddha-nature’”, is always a hot topic among Buddhist Chan practitioners, yet the ‘Buddha-nature’ inherent in everybody’s mind is, in fact, noumenal. As for the phrase, “self-purification of one’s mind”, its purport is exhort a practitioner to realize that human mind is in nature delusive, because man’s inherent stupidity tends to arouse in a human being’s mind greed or avarice which in turn motivates him or her to become obsessed with his or her life span. To put it more straightforward, the purport of the proposition as a whole is exhort all Chan practitioners to rid themselves of the attachment to the mundane life so that they would switch their attention on to nirvana and finally on to moksa.(From My Heart My Buddha)
