(43) Most practitioners can recite Prajna-Paramita-Hrdya Sutra (心经). But what is more important for a practitioner is <1> putting, into his everyday practice of self-cultivation, the truth which is revealed in the sutra, and <2> deepening his comprehension of the sutra by finding out how the truth revealed in the sutra is borne out by occurrences in everyday life, so that he can gain a more and more incisive insight into the universality of emptiness existing behind the panca skandhas. It is only after a practitioner can fully realize the universality of emptiness in the panca skandhas, so that he can experience the fullness of doctrinal dimensions of the concept that pratitya-samutpada (emptiness maneuvers all interdependence-based originations of phenomena) and that of the concept that sunyata (emptiness reigns supreme in the union of causes and conditions). Every effort a practitioner makes to enhance his comprehension of the two concepts shortens the distance he has to cover before he reaches his ultimate enlightenment. In Platform Sutra Hui Neng, the Sixth Patriarch, points out: “Without any obsessions with the materiality of the universe, the peace of a practitioner’s mind can never be shattered.” Being devoid of any attachments to egocentrism, a practitioner is able to cope with any difficulty he might run into before he enters full enlightenment.(From My Heart My Buddha)
