(28) To study Buddhism through oral or written discourses should not be regarded as the only channel for us to know Buddhism thoroughly. Prior to his nirvana, Gautama Buddha had invented and formulated innumerable “dharma gates” exclusively for enabling the multitudes to eliminate their countless afflictions. And generation after generation of virtuous hierarchs in the history of Chinese Buddhism added to the bonanza of dharma-gates already created by Sakyamuni by establishing spectra of additional dharma-gates. The amplified bonanza of dharma-gates is undeniably all purpose. Therefore for a practitioner, it would be quite unwise to stick obstinately to only one, or a limited number of, dharma-gates.(From My Heart My Buddha)
