Vimalakirti, an early lay Buddhist(the Buddhist who conducts the Buddhist practice and cultivation at home), was a very rich man in ancient India who possessed countless fortune and numerous maids and servants. However, due to his diligence and sincerity in the study of Buddhist sutras, he successfully obtained the immortal spiritual state and then was called Vimalakirti Bodhisattva. One day, he asked for leave due to illness, which worried the Buddha. Buddha sent the most intelligent Manjusri Buddhisattva and other disciple to visit him. When Manjusri Buddisattva met Vimalakirti, they started a profound and intense discussion on Buddhist sutras, which greatly impacted the following Arhats and disciples. Then a classic sutra Vimalakirti Sutra was written and pasted down, which gives an explanation to the lay Buddhist on how to learn the Buddhist sutras and how to spread its spirit. It is a great instruction for Mahayana Buddhists. The ideas of cleared mind leading to cleared Buddhist realm, between the mortal earthliness and the immortal state, cultivating for the immortal state from the earthliness, are important theories for latter Zen Buddhism.
