On the way to Devadarsita, there was a place called Lumbini Park. The queen and her attendants arrived at this park around noon and the weather was hot, so the queen ordered her attendants to stop so that she could rest for a while in the shade of the trees. But just then her labor pains came on, and soon after she gave birth to the prince. The party then returned to Kapilavastu. King Suddhodana was elated at the sight of the newborn prince.
According to legend, a wise sage named Asita, who lived in the mountains outside Kapilavastu, came to visit Prince Siddhartha shortly after his birth in order to read the prince's physiognomy. When he saw the child, he said to the king,"Your Majesty, I have never in my life seen anyone with such a gracious and majestic countenance. There are two different paths for the prince to follow. If he stays home, there is no doubt that he will be a great king."
"What about the other path?" The king was very curious.
"His other path will be to leave home. If he chooses this path, he will certainly attain enlightenment, become perfect in both wisdom and virtue, and become a great teacher to all the people and celestial beings of the universe."
The king wondered about his son's life."When will it be determined whether he stays or leaves home?"
The wise man said,"When he turns twenty-nine."
The king certainly wanted his son to have a family like other members of the royal families, raise children and succeed him in ruling the kingdom."Will it be possible for my son to stay at home and take my place?" However, looking up, the king was surprised to see tears in the old man's eyes."Why are you in tears?"
"By the time he becomes a savior, I won't be around to hear his magnificient teachings. That is why I am so sad."
Hearing the sage's explanation, the king was speechless. He was soon saddened by another unexpected tragic event: Queen Mahamaya died seven days after she gave birth to her child. Siddhartha was raised by his aunt, Maha-Prajapati, who was also his father's second wife. She took care of the boy and brought him up with as much devotion as she would have shown to her own son. Under her watchful eye, the prince quickly grew up. He was handsome and healthey. When he was eight years old, the king began to invite all kinds of teachers to the palace to educate him in the skills of reading, archery, horsemanship, etc.(The Buddha and His Ten Disciples)
