A government official asked Master Zhaozhou, “Will monks go down into hell after death?”

 

Master answered, “I will be the first one going into hell.”

 

The official asked confusingly, “You are an enlightened eminent monk with profound Buddhism cultivation. How can you go down into hell?”

 

Zhaozhou answered, “Who will enlighten you if I don’t go down into hell?”
