Zhao Zhou asked Nan Quan: "What is the path?"

 

Nan Quan said: "Everyday life is the path."

 

Zhao Zhou asked: "Can it be studied?"

 

Nan Quan said: "If you try to study, you will be far away from it."

 

Zhao Zhou asked: "If I do not study, how can I know it is the path?"

 

Nan Quan said: "The path does not belong to the perception world; neither does it belong to the non-perception world. Cognition is a delusion and non-cognition is senseless. If you want to reach the true path beyond doubt, place yourself in the same freedom as sky. You name it neither good nor not-good."

 

At these words Zhao Zhou was enlightened.

 

Wumen's Comment: Nan Quan could melt Zhao Zhou’s frozen doubts at once when Zhao Zhou asked his questions. I doubt that if Zhao Zhou reached the point that Nan Quan did. He needed thirty more years of study.
