An officer came to a Chan master, being curious about where the monks would go after their death, and asked, "Master, where will the monks go after they die?"

"They will slave away."

The officer was astonished by that because he thought they would go to the Western Paradise. So he furthered, "And then?"

"And then descend into hell."

"That's impossible! Master like you are well-informed about Buddhism, how can the Buddha cast you into hell?"

"If not me, whoever will go to the hell to save you? Buddha is in everywhere only that you can find him. He can be in the heaven, and surely he can be in the hell where he is needed."
