On Nov. 24, 2008, Shaolin Temple and the Guandu district signed an agreement to officially take over the four ancient temples including Miaozhan Temple, Tuzhu Temple, Fading Temple and Guanyin Temple. The length of the agreement is 20 years. The Ancient Town of Guandu where the four ancient temples are located has a history of more than two thousand years and is one of Yunnan province’ s top 10 ancient towns, with a deep cultural foundation as well as numerous cultural relics and historic sites. There are relics of the “five mountains, six monasteries, seven pavilions and eight temples” in the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties only within 1.5 square kilometers. Shaolin Temple took over the four ancient temples in the Ancient Town of Guandu, which set up a new bridge of cultural exchanges between Henan province and Yunnan province. This also built a platform and created conditions for Shaolin Temple to be established in Yunnan province and expand Buddhist cultural exchanges with South Asia and Southeast Asia.

Under the agreement, Shaolin Temple sent the first batch of ten monks entering the four ancient temples, and managed the ancient temples following Shaolin Temple’ s management principle and mode. Time limit of Entrusted management is 20 years. All the costs of repair, as well as monks’ food, housing and transportation are borne by Shaolin Temple during entrusted management.

Kunming Shaolin Temple is located in the center of the Ancient Town of Guandu in Kunming city. It takes the Adamantine as the center, made up of ancient complex including Miaozhan Temple, Fading Temple, Tuzhu Temple, Guanyin Temple, etc.

At present, Kunming Shaolin Temple uses the concept of “Wide heart embracing all and harmony”, inherits original monastic culture, and also takes the propagation of Buddhist culture, Chan culture and Shaolin culture as its own duty, state and local religious policy as the guidance, and cultural development as the goal, to stimulate local economic development and prosperity.

During an interview with the media, abbot Yongxin said: “These new temples joining us are different from those so called sub-temples in history. These affiliated temples are just a title. For example, the four ancient temples in Kunming that Shaolin Temple only sent monks to manage and conduct the exploration, communication and inheritance, but not really owns the four temples.” he also said, many places would like to invite Shaolin monks to help them handle affairs. They valued not Shaolin monks themselves, but Shaolin culture, especially Shaolin Temple’ s Chan cultivation, Shaolin Kungfu and other traditional cultures Shaolin monks would bring.
