There generally are two images standing at each side of the Buddha’s statue in the Buddhist monasteries. Who are they?

If the images are one old and one young, the old is Mahakassapa, and the young Ananda. If they look about the same age, one is Sariputta and the other Moggallana. However, these images exist only in Han Buddhist temples, while in temples of the southern tradition, the Buddha’s image is enshrined alone, unaccompanied by any of his disples.
