The 12th Nagoya Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration, under the theme Happy Chinese New Year, kicked off on the morning of Jan 6 in the central Japanese city Nagoya. The three-day celebration, organized by local Chinese communities, was held at Hisaya Square in downtown Nagoya.

Sponsored by China's Ministry of Culture and organized by the cultural department of Central China's Henan province, the Culture and Art Troupe of Henan Province paid a visit to Nagoya and brought the city its best Chinese New Year wishes and outstanding performances featuring songs, dance, and Shaolin kung fu.

Meanwhile, exhibitions of central China's Luoyang tri-colored glazed porcelains and peony paintings were held.

Deng Wei, Chinese consul general in Nagoya, opened the ceremony with Ichiro Hirosawa, vice mayor of Nagoya city, and other officials from both countries. Deng expressed the hope that the celebrations for Chinese Lunar New Year in Nagoya would be used as a platform to promote mutual understanding and friendship between people in China and Japan.

Hirosawa also delivered remarks at the ceremony, saying that as 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan, the two countries should fully capitalize on this opportunity to further enhance communications and make new contributions to improve bilateral relations.

The annual event, which began in 2007, has developed into an important platform for local people to learn more about Chinese culture and promote mutual understanding and cultural exchanges between Japan and China.

Happy Chinese New Year is a worldwide activity for celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, hosted by China's Ministry of Culture and other Chinese authorities since 2009. It seeks to provide a global platform that is joyful, harmonious and accessible to all, to encourage people across the world to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year, experience the profound yet interesting Chinese culture and understand the huge achievements China has made.
