Shaolin Temple Cultural Center of Arizona Successfully Holds the First American International Martial Arts Competition in Arizona

The Shaolin Temple Cultural Center of Arizona successfully held the first American International Martial Arts Competition in Arizona organized by the cultural center’s person in charge Shi Yanqing. On the event day, around 200 people participated in the contest and about 600 people watched it on the scene from 6 states of America. Alderman Mr. Sam Huang and Jerry Dai, president of the United Chinese Association of Arizona and other guests attended the opening ceremony. They agreed that this is a very fine activity of cultural exchange and cultural transmission which can promote cultural communications between both China and the US. Mr. Sam Huang claimed Mayor’s letter of congratulations.





Shifu Kenny Perez performed the lion dance following the American national anthem performed by Shaolin disciple Brenda Battaglia and a playing of the Chinese national anthem.



Traditional Chinese martial arts has a reputation for its long history and profound culture, having many different martial arts schools, achievement methods and skills. The competition was mainly divided into two parts: practice routines and free combat. Shi Yanqing acted as the chief referee.. there have been 23 years since Shi Yanqing carried out the spread and development of Shaolin Kungfu. He had followed Abbot Shi Yongxin for 15 years. According to Shi Yanqing, the development of martial arts industry nether develop in isolation of the interpretation and propagation of culture nor in isolation of the participation and experience from the public.









There were children group, young group and senior group in the morning competition of practice routines. Competitors from the children group were clever, sprout and cute but their every gesture and motion was rigorous and forceful. The competition awarded the gold, the silver and the blonde medals after the end of the game for each group in the way of timely awarding.

Venerable Master Shi Yongxin particularly focused on the competition and sent his letter of congratulations, hoping that the Shaolin Temple Cultural Center of Arizona could carry forward Shaolin culture and benefit more local people. Shi Yanqing expressed that the Shaolin Temple Cutlural Center of Arizona will continue to hold the second American International Martial Arts Competition on August in next year to better carry forward the traditional Chinese culture and Shaolin culture.
