Emperor Yao, one of the legendary Five Emperors, is the first person from ancient times who originally suggested Buddhist service. Emperor Yao is the originator and founder of Chan Buddhist service. Shen Nong, also called Emperor Yan, is one of the legendary ancestors of the Chinese nation. The Historical Records says, “There has been medicine originally since Shen Nong tasted hundreds of herbs”, “Shen Nong got poisoned by seventy-two poisons, and was detoxicated by tea”. Shaolin Temple was honored as “the first temple in China”. The essence of Shaolin culture—“Chan(meditation), Wu(martial arts) and Yi(medicine)” were recognized as “Shaolin Temple’s three gems” which has a long history and is an important part of traditional Chinese culture.

Deputy general-manager of China Tea Corp. and general manager of Fujian Tea Import and Export Co. Ltd. Wei Saiming delivered a speech at the tea party ceremony. He expressed today was a special day that is not only the “Laba Festival”—the day Buddha attained enlightenment, but also a day of gathering for tea lovers. Chan and tea mix together while the history and culture come down in one continuous line. So the Songshan tea party has a special significance. It was hoped that there will be able to cooperate with Shaolin Temple to take a combination of tea culture, Chan culture and Shaolin culture and carry forward the traditional Chinese culture jointly.

On the afternoon of January 12, Shi Yongxin talked with tea experts and introduced the development of international tea culture and its origin relations with Shaolin Temple, referring that Shaolin Temple had put forward the concept of “Chan tea” in 1980s. It was hoped that taking the product as carrier to better explain Chan tea culture.
