“The International Symposium on Shaolin Temple and Buddhism in Sui and Tang Dynasties” Grandly Opens in the Shaolin Temple

On July 20, 2018, at 9:00 am, the opening of the International Symposium on “Shaolin Temple and Buddhism in Sui and Tang” Dynasties was held at the Meditation Hall in the Shaolin Temple. Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China, the Buddhist Association of Henan Province and the Abbot of China Songshan Shaolin Temple the Great Monk Yongxin, the member of Dengfeng Municipal Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department Li Li, professor of the Tsinghua University Master Shengkai, Director of the Shaolin Cultural Institute Professor Wen Yucheng, Professor Ma Mingda from the Jinan University, President of East Asia Institute of Princeton University Professor Sgtehpen, Doctor of Pali Institute of University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka Master Shi Yanyin, Shaolin cultural advisor and Doctor of Philosophy Mr Gao Yuan, more than 30 scholars as well as hundreds of Shaolin monks and overseas Shaolin disciples attended the opening ceremony.





Sui and Tang period was China’s most prosperous period in history, especially Tang Dynasty in which the country was prosperous, traditional culture was flourishing, society was stable, and people were rich. In the meantime, the Shaolin Temple flourished in the golden ages.

To fully explore Shaolin Temple’s historical details and go further into Shaolin Temple’s important position of Buddhism in Sui and Tang period, China Songshan Shaolin Temple, Institute for Ethics and Religions of Studies of Tsinghua University and Center of Buddhist Studies of Peking University jointly held the “International Symposium on Shaolin Temple and Buddhism in Sui and Tang Dynasties”.

The Abbot of the Shaolin Temple the Great Monk Yongxin extended his warm welcome to all the specialists and scholars. He said that Buddhism in Sui and Tang dynasties was its heyday. Especially in Tang Dynasty, Chinese Buddhism developed eight great Buddhist schools, which is an important milestone. During Sui and Tang period, it was also Shaolin Temple’s development peak. In Tang Dynasty, Chan origin became the most unique and influential Buddhist school. The Shaolin Temple, as the Ancestral Monastery of Chan Sect, plays a crucial role in the history of Chan sect. with the good governance and harmonious people, the prosperous country and peaceful people, Buddha illuminating and the good situation for Dharma nowadays, the Shaolin Temple has welcomed a good chance to develop. Since the 1990s, the Shaolin Temple has always worked on the development of academic literature and already successively published a number of collected papers and the book series of Shaolin, which is fruitful. In future, the Shaolin Temple will hold academic discussions on “the Shaolin Temple and Buddhism in Song and Yuan Dynasties”, “the Shaolin Temple and Buddhism in Ming and Qing Dynasties”, “the Shaolin Temple, Buddhism in Republic period and others to further explore precious wealth of Shaolin culture.




The member of Dengfeng Municipal Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department Ms Li Li said that Dengfeng has a long history and splendid culture with the three religions of Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism compiling and harmonious intergrowth. The Shaolin Temple is the name card of Dengfeng. Since Buddhabhadra (Chinese: 跋陀) built it, the Shaolin Temple gradually the origin of Dashabhumika school (Chinese: 地论宗), Vinaya school (Chinese: 律宗) and Chan sect and occupies the remarkable status in Sui and Tang dynasties. Especially since China’s reform and opening up, the Shaolin culture has won fame both at home and abroad, Shaolin cultural centers have been located around the world, “Shaolin Culture on Silk Road” sponsored by the Shaolin Temple powerfully is promoting and serving “the Belt and Road” initiative which has become the famous international cultural brand that is universally recognized.

Director of Shaolin Cultural Institute Wen Yucheng said that the Shaolin Temple’s materials saved is the most systematic and complete among thousands of temples in China, which is far-reaching and significant for researching Chinese history and Buddhist history. The Shaolin Temple could always make the right choice in the history so that the Shaolin culture is able to inherited and carried forward.




Professor Ma Daming from Jinan University narrated his own family had ties from the Shaolin Temple in Republican period. His research focuses on Shaolin culture’s exchanges between China and foreign countries and the multi-ethnic cultural exchanges in recent years. After China’s reform and opening up, the Shaolin Temple takes advantage of the national development of the east and gradually steps towards prosperity again. He thinks that the Shaolin Temple constantly strengthens communication with academic community, improves the Shaolin Temple’s awareness on the academic aspect and promotes Shaolin culture to continue to grow and prosper while avoiding being contaminated by the social impetuous atmosphere, which is undoubtedly the most correct choice.

After the end of the opening ceremony of “the International Symposium on Shaolin Temple and Buddhism in Sui and Tang Dynasties”, the participated guests joyfully visited the Shaolin Temple Permanent Residence Compound together. In the next two days, specialists and scholars from all over the world will gather at the foot of the Shaoshi Mountain to discuss and explore the Shaolin Temple’s cultural development and profound influence in Sui and Tang dynasties.
