In China, the 15th of the second month of the lunar calendar is commonly accepted as the Day of the Buddha’s Parinibbana, the 8th of the fourth month as the Buddha’s birthday, and the 8th of the twelfth month as the Day of the Buddha’s enlightenment. In South and Southeast Asian countries, however, the full moon day of May of the Gregorian calendar (corresponding to the 15th of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar) is the Buddhist Holy Day called Vesakha, which is regarded as the Day of the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, as well as Parinibbana.
