Chan debate has the most influence among all these activities. Monasteries in different areas of the country put great emphasis on preaching sutras and experiencing the monastic life, which is in accord with the Buddhist traditional practice. Shaolin Temple integrates the ancestors’ ji feng (thought-provoking insights) with the form of Tibetan Buddhist debate and debating competition of British universities and launches the Chan debate, which is open to both the monastics and lay Buddhists.

Ji feng in Chinese Chan Buddhism is a metaphor for thought-provoking and insightful statements, usually used by Chan practitioners to examine one another’s level of spiritual cultivation. It is considered as a fundamental capability for a Chan practitioner. Improving this fundamental capability of the monastics is conductive to the advancement of their intellectual competence and growth of the successive talents. (From Shaolin Temple in My Heart)
