Therefore, Shaolin Temple was a monastery of Vinaya tradition in early times. It was after the Tang Dynasty that Shaolin Temple abolished the Vinaya tradition and upheld the Chan tradition, thus renowned as a Chan monastery. During the Tang Dynasty period, there was a Tripitaka master Yijing, who had been to India to study Buddhism just like Xuanzang. He once set up the ordination platforms to transmit precepts at Shaolin Temple. According to historical records, the latest precept transmission ceremony was held during the Qing Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1662-1722).

During the Kangxi era, the officially designed Shaolin Temple Abbot Bian Haikuang held a precept transmission ceremony. After the passing of Haikuang, Shaolin Temple had no officially designed abbot and thus ceased to conduct the precept transmission ceremony. Shaolin’s vacancy of designed abbot for three centuries led to over 300-year cessation of the precept transmission ceremony.

In 1990s, I made a considerable effort to renovate the architecture damaged by fire, renew the degraded ecological environment and restore the basic monastic activities. Meanwhile, I was also exploring a new pattern to sustain the monastery. In the 21st century, I have always yearned to revive a series of high-level religious activities in this sacred land of Buddhism and ancestral monastery of Chan sect. Therefore, we built a new Meditation Hall, held the Shaolin Chan Inquire activity and also restored the precept transmission ceremony after 300 years’ cessation. (From Shaolin Temple in My Heart)
