Since we, Buddhists, would devote ourselves, and are devoting ourselves, to propagating Buddhism and administering salvation to the multitudes, it goes without saying that it is incumbent upon us to have direct contacts with them in person and to face up to not only any problems they might pose to us but also any problems which they are unable to handle. The extent to which Buddhism can exert to help the masses handle their spiritual or moral issues and the extent to which the masses feel satisfied with our exertion in that regard constitute two points we, Buddhists, should keep track of all the time. Else Buddhism in China is not likely to thrive.
Development of Buddhism in China hinges on immensity of the benefit Buddhists and Buddhist teaching can offer to the Chinese population. And Buddhists need to work to benefit the Chinese people in such a way as the benevolent deeds performed by them are completely in line with Buddhist doctrines. All Buddhists in China ought to join hands to fulfill benevolent deeds in such a way. However one point needs to be made clear here is that the greatest benefit we, Buddhists, can do in the interest of the Chinese people is Dharma-based benefit, rather than material interests.(From My Heart My Buddha)
